Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic R&D Tax Manager to lead and manage the end-to-end process of preparing R&D tax relief claims. This role is integral to delivering outstanding technical and financial insight to a wide range of clients, while ensuring compliance with evolving tax legislation. The ideal candidate will bring a well-rounded understanding of science, engineering, and financial disciplines, and will play a key role in mentoring team members, building client relationships, and supporting business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and assess eligible R&D activities within client businesses in line with current HMRC guidelines.
- Analyse technical and financial data to calculate qualifying R&D expenditure.
- Prepare detailed R&D tax relief claims, including supporting documentation and comprehensive technical reports.
- Liaise directly with clients to understand their projects, operations, and innovation strategy.
- Conduct interviews with technical and finance teams to gather project evidence and assess claim eligibility.
- Present findings and recommendations clearly to clients and stakeholders.
- Provide strategic advice on optimising R&D claims while ensuring full compliance with tax regulations.
- Explore additional tax incentives, including Patent Box and Land Remediation Relief.
- Guide clients on documentation standards and robust claim procedures.
- Respond to HMRC enquiries, disputes, and audits confidently and professionally.
- Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on client claims.
What you need:
- Qualified ACA/ACCA, AAT or CTA.
- Proven, hands on technical experience, in adition to having financial experience.
- Proven experience managing R&D tax claims in a UK professional services, accountancy, or specialist R&D consultancy environment.
- Strong technical understanding of R&D tax legislation and eligibility criteria.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to understand complex technical information and translate it into accessible, persuasive narratives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and client management experience.
- Commercial awareness and ability to provide strategic, value-adding advice to clients.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills.
